The Best Medicine

Allister had the tendency to avoid doctors. It was not that he did not trust them. In his heart, Allister believed that all he needed was a good night's sleep to rid himself of all ills and bodily harm. If one night's sleep was insufficient, why then, he would just sleep through the day, perhaps even through that following night. And, by then, usually he found himself at one hundred percent. I say usually because there are a number of things that would not and, in Allister's case, did not, go away after a peaceful slumber. These were as follows:

Broken Bones (Of which, Allister had over eighty cases. In some instances, shattering the same bone several different times.)
Rabies
Poor Vision (Gained as a result of not medicating himself when he had rabies.)
Ingrown Toenails
Separation Anxiety
Various Phobias
Yellow Fever

Allister was a devout practitioner in the belief that what did not kill you, made you stronger. A good friend of Allister's once said, "Yes, but could not it also make you almost dead? Or so close to death that you will die two years earlier than you should have?" To this question, Allister had no answer. So, he retreated to what he knew best and napped until the following morning. At first light, his friend was long gone. Allister did not possess facts to back up his theory, but he believed he could repair all that ailed him in his dreams. He would shut his eyes and feel for the pain. And, at various times in his life, he believed an angel living inside his lower abdomen or a secretive force of extra anti-bodies hiding in stomach lining, worked on him and raised his eyelids when they were finished. And, in many cases, though valid reasons could not be gathered, he awoke and felt better.

Skeptics said he faked feeling better. Allister would say, "What reason would I have to fabricate a lie? I tell you only what works for me. And what I have discovered is that you will never know what powers you hold inside if you do not test yourself every now and again." The fanatical clerics shouted, "Blasphemy! This man claims he is holier than us all, that angels cure him!" "Angel! An-gel! Singular, no 's'! I only ever said that one angel healed me. And it wasn't a miracle! The angel, I believe, has a medical background. This is all merely theory, merely feeling. I have never once seen the angel. It only feels as if an angel is fixing me," Allister would be forced to testify, "And besides the angel, I have also said it could be a secretive force of anti-bodies. Anti-bodies, to my knowledge, have nothing to do with religion!" "Blasphemy! Everything has something to do with religion!"

The fanatical clerics worked their angles hard and often left Allister weak and exhausted. His voice hoarse and his head aching. He would retire once again to his cure-all, a good night's slumber. But, as was stated earlier, there were some things Allister could never sleep off.
